  126. As soon as you turn on the computer
  127. the BIOS chips come to life. BIOS
  128. stands for Basic Input Output
  129. System.  The computer has one or
  130. more of these ROM (Read Only
  131. Memory) chips.  The BIOS is the
  132. first step in telling the computer
  133. who it is.  The Central Processing
  134. Unit (CPU chip) is the main
  135. thinking part of the computer, but
  136. so far, it has no thoughts to think
  137. about.  The BIOS hooks it up to
  138. other parts, places where thoughts
  139. can be stored.  The BIOS tells it
  140. how to talk with the disk drives,
  141. the RAM (Random Access Memory), the
  142. keyboard and the monitor.
